A journey of discipline and growth
Passion – have you wondered what drives someone to dedicate their career to business development? For Brad Vanhaerents, vice president of business development, it’s the opportunity to lead and inspire teams to achieve their best. Brad finds fulfillment in fostering discipline, accountability and a strong work ethic among his team members. This deep commitment to leadership and growth provides a sense of purpose and fulfillment that’s rare in other professions. For Brad and his team, discipline isn’t just a word; it’s a promise to consistently strive for excellence and overcome challenges together.
Lessons from the military
Brad attributes much of his success to the discipline instilled in him during his military career. Understanding hierarchy and team building has been crucial in his development as a leader.
“Being taught and developing the proper attitude to ‘not quit’ has been invaluable to me over the years,” shares Brad. “Quitting or giving up when a task must be completed was never an option.”
This mindset has helped Brad tackle challenges head-on and ensure tasks are completed.
Leadership shaped by discipline
Discipline is the cornerstone of Brad’s leadership approach. He believes that without discipline, motivation alone won’t get you far. Consistent training, repetition and facing challenges in the military have provided Brad with lifelong principles to develop as a leader. Maintaining a positive attitude, even during tough times, helps drive out negativity.
“We trained on having a proper, positive attitude to push through difficult times without complaining,” shares Brad.
Motivation to grow as a leader
“Spending time with the branches and teams, allows me to understand the challenges they are facing so we can devise plans to overcome those barriers,” explains Brad. “Seeing the professional growth of our team brings me great satisfaction. Serving others is one of the keys to success.”
Brad is motivated by the challenge of being better than yesterday. He leads by example, being present and active where development is needed in his region.
Essential traits for leadership
Brad believes that consistency, accountability and a strong work ethic are essential for leadership. High communication with the team and leadership is crucial. Consistent training promotes discipline and trusting but verifying plans ensures accountability. Brad’s goal is to push his team to a point of being uncomfortable to develop strengths within each person.
Recharging outside of work
To recharge, Brad works out 4-5 days a week and walks his Rottweiler, Leo, twice a day to clear his mind and reset. Now that their kids are grown, Brad and his wife, Jen, enjoy their downtime by taking short trips and traveling.
