What does an Enhabit branch director do?

Caring for communities

At Enhabit Home Health & Hospice, branch directors are the cornerstone of every local team. Each Enhabit branch director combines clinical excellence, compassionate leadership and operational oversight to ensure patients receive the highest quality care wherever they call home.

Leading with compassion and expertise

Enhabit branch directors are registered nurses who bring extensive experience in patient care and leadership. They oversee both clinical and office operations, making sure every team member has the support, tools and guidance needed to deliver on Enhabit’s promise of providing A Better Way to Care® by expanding what’s possible for patient care in the home.

“I am big on values and compassion,” said Amanda R., RN, Enhabit branch director. “You can have all the experience in the world, but if you aren’t compassionate or empathetic, how can you do your job? We go into someone’s home, their personal space, and treat them at the lowest point in their life. You must have a love for people and education.”

From hiring clinicians to mentoring staff, each Enhabit branch director ensures every decision centers on the patient’s well-being. They play a hands-on role in delivering care and in team development, modeling the empathy and excellence that define Enhabit’s care philosophy.

A career built on connection

Amanda’s journey to becoming an Enhabit branch director began in pediatrics. For three years, she cared for children with tracheostomies and ventilators and taught families how to care for their loved ones at home.

“The reason I became a pediatric nurse was because my youngest son had so many health problems,” Amanda said. “I felt all parents needed to learn to be advocates for their children.”

After piloting a telehealth program and transitioning into adult home health and hospital case management, Amanda realized her heart belonged in home health care. “I honestly never thought I would take a leadership role,” she admitted. “I saw myself as a case manager forever. But once I stepped into this role, I realized how much knowledge I could share. I love my patients and clinicians, and I’ll happily problem-solve for anyone who needs me.”

A day in the life of an Enhabit branch director

For Amanda, no two days look the same. Every day begins and ends with teamwork.

“We have a stand-up meeting as often as possible to address any immediate concerns,” Amanda said. “Then it’s catching up on emails, approving documentation, following up on referral logs, meetings, reports and phone calls so my back-office staff can take a break.”

This structured rhythm allows Amanda and her team to care for patients with flexibility and excellence. Her responsibilities range from reviewing care plans and documentation to supporting clinicians in the field. She often follows up directly with physicians to ensure patients’ needs are met quickly and efficiently.

“My hands are in literally everything regarding the branch,” Amanda noted. “I’m huge on continuing education and best practices so our patients receive the most current care we can provide.”

Building culture through care

At Enhabit, leadership is about more than management — it’s about creating a culture where people feel seen, supported and inspired to grow. Amanda said her favorite part of being an Enhabit branch director is encouraging her team.

“Seeing my clinicians smile or watching their faces when a problem has been solved — it’s so rewarding,” she said. “I’m their back-up, here to make their lives easier. They are the true heroes; I’m just here for support.”

She finds creative ways to keep morale high, often celebrating her team’s exceptional work through the company’s internal recognition program using Enhabit Reward points.

“My team loves receiving Enhabit Reward points and free food,” Amanda said with a laugh. “We frequently have a buffet at case conference, and I give out Enhabit Reward points as often as possible, so they know how much I appreciate them.”

Case conference: a time to learn and connect

Case conference is a key part of Enhabit’s collaborative care model, where the entire team comes together to discuss patient updates, challenges and successes.

“Case conference is a time of discussion and education,” Amanda explained. “Our team has no problem bringing up different opinions to overcome barriers for patients. I use the time to teach on wound care, OASIS [Outcome and Assessment Information Set], documentation — anything that needs consistency.”

Through these meetings, Amanda fosters a spirit of learning and unity, helping every clinician grow while keeping patient care at the center.

Ensuring high-quality patient care

Achieving clinical excellence is a priority for every Enhabit branch. For Amanda, that means staying present, proactive and informed.

“I constantly educate myself on best practices and relay that to my clinicians and patients,” she said. “I also touch base and do quality calls daily. I want my clinicians and patients to know I’m an ever-present figure at the branch and easily accessible. My clinical team leader (CTL) is my right-hand woman; we coordinate every day to make sure patients are getting the best care possible. Teamwork makes the dream work.”

Advice for aspiring leaders

Amanda said becoming an Enhabit branch director takes time, patience and humility — but it’s one of the most rewarding paths a nurse can take.

“This will take time,” she said. “You’ll feel lost for a while until all the puzzle pieces fit together. Rely on your tenured staff; they’re vital. Ask questions, never assume and remember you have support every step of the way.”
