Business development leadership with Justin Barrow

Integrity — have you ever wondered what drives someone to build trust across an entire organization? For Justin Barrow, vice president of business development at Enhabit Home Health & Hospice, integrity isn’t just a value — it’s the foundation of every decision he makes and every team he leads. Leadership, he believes, starts by showing up and meeting the needs of the day.

Justin joined Enhabit in 2021 as an area manager. Two years later, he became director of business development and later advanced to vice president of business development. Each step reinforced his belief that leaders earn trust through consistency, humility and a willingness to work alongside their teams.

Leadership influences and career inspiration

“Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to have guidance from both past and current leaders who have inspired me,” Justin said, reflecting on lessons he learned from his mentors. “My approach is to learn something valuable from everyone because each person has a lesson to offer.”

That curiosity extends beyond healthcare. As a passionate sports fan, Justin often studies coaches and leadership philosophies, emphasizing one leader who continues to stand out to him.

“The legendary college football coach who recently passed away, Lou Holtz, is someone I’ve long admired,” he said. “One of his quotes that resonates with me is, ‘Ability is what you’re capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it.’”

How a clinical background shapes healthcare leadership

“I began my professional career as a physical therapy assistant treating patients in an outpatient setting,” he said, explaining how his experience continues to shape his leadership approach. “Having that foundation and background has afforded me a greater understanding of the entire continuum of what we do.”

That clinical foundation helps Justin stay grounded in patient needs and the importance of coordinated care. When he transitioned into sales leadership, his perspective widened, enabling him to advocate for patients on a broader scale.

“Expanding my career into sales leadership has allowed me to become a patient advocate far beyond what I ever thought possible,” he emphasized. “It has allowed my passion for patient care to extend beyond the clinic or my individual caseload, and to ensure as many patients as possible receive the right care, at the right time.”

Essential leadership traits for success in healthcare

When asked what defines effective leadership, Justin points to three traits.

“Integrity, discipline and empathy,” he said. “Integrity to do what’s right even when no one is looking, discipline in doing the little things to create consistency and dependability for yourself as well as others around you, and to lead with empathy.”

Those traits guide how he leads teams, navigates change and supports growth across the organization.

Fueling the work beyond the workday

Outside of work, Justin prioritizes family, fitness and community involvement. He spends much of his time coaching his three children and supporting youth sports.

“I have three young kids and an incredible wife who I love spending time with,” he said. “I love to coach all of my children in the various sports they play and have always had a passion for youth sports and developing kids in the community athletically and spiritually.”

Justin also values staying active and unplugging when possible.

“One of my absolute favorite ways to recharge is a fall college football Saturday with something on the grill and my Fighting Irish of Notre Dame on the television,” he said.
